5 October 1922 - West Branch Times

Jesse Negus was the son of Israel and Lydia G. Negus, and was born near Damascus, Ohio, First Month 8th, 1837. In early life he lost his mother when his uncle in Pennsylvania took him to his home where he resided until his father married again, when the family was reunited. In 1852 the family removed to Cedar county, Ia. In 1858 he was united in marriage to Rachel E. Mather at Red Cedar Meeting House, Springdale, to which union were born two sons and one daughter--a son and daughter died in infancy. The surviving son, William P. and wife Claudia with their two daughters Olive M. Negus and J. Ardith Henderson, are left to mourn the loss of father and grandfather. The mother was called Fifth Month, 28th, 1916. She was indeed a faithful helpmate, and her death was a heavy blow to her companion, yet he bore his stroke with patience and Christian fortitude; but from this loss he never fully recovered; gradually the ties binding him to the things of time were loosened and finally severed, when his spirit peacefully passed away early in the morning of Tenth Month, 2nd, 1922, aged 85 years, 8 months and 6 days, thus ending to those who knew and loved him a life of quiet, active benevolence in cooperation with his beloved Rachel. One of his favorite scripture texts to which it was his concern that his life should conform was the summing up of the wisdom of Solomon. "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter, fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man."

Funeral was held from the Conservative Friends meeting house Tuesday afternoon. Those relatives and friends who came from a distance were Wm. Bye, B. L. Wick, Mrs. Julia Sunde, Misses Sarah and Mary Tow, all of Cedar Rapids; Ole Sevig of Norway Station; Anders Visborg of Portland, Ore.; Wm. Mather, son Carl wife and daughter Bethany, and Mrs. I. J. Hamiel of Tipton; Mrs. Everett Means, Mrs. J. W. Enlow and Prof. Frederick Higbee of Iowa City, Robert Milnes of Muscatine.
