6 July 1922 - West Branch Times

Nay Dunn, better known to everyone as "Jack" Dunn, and aged 23 years is dead as a result of an accident that occurred late last Thursday afternoon on the V. S. McKarahan farm three miles northeast of town.

He and Thomas Stafford were operating the McKarahan farm, and the young man was working late, driving four horses, the loader trailing. He struck one of the horses to accelerate the speed, and as it leaped forward, it frightened the other three horses. The resultant jolt threw Jack from the wagon and he alighted behind the horses. The wagon and hay loader passed over his body.

A physician was at once summoned and it was discovered that the victim was paralyzed from the neck down. The ambulance was called from Iowa City and the unfortunate man was quickly taken to the hospital at Iowa City where he died at 7:40 o'clock Friday evening.

From the first his injuries were known to be fatal as some of the vertebrae were crushed, but though paralyzed he retained consciousness until near the end

John Basher of Plato accompanied the remains to the old home at Greenville, Tenn., leaving Saturday morning.

The following telegram sent by Mayor Moore to the bereaved family fittingly expresses the sentiment of the people of this community regarding the unforunate young man: West Branch, Iowa, July 2, 1922. Mr. R. T. Dunn and Family, Greenville, Tennessee. Kind Friends--In behalf of the people of this town and community, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to you at this time when sorrow and gloom have been cast over your home in the tragical death of your son.

"Jack", as we knew him here, has been among us for several years and fit into our community life in a way that was creditable to any young man. In all of his dealings he was strictly honorable and he had justly won the confidence of the people of this community and of his conduct here you may be justly proud. His death was untimely and the community mourns.

It is our earnest hope that the knowledge of the esteem in which he was held in this community may serve as a shining ray in this darkest hour. T.A. Moore, Mayor.
