10 March 1921 - West Branch Times

The death of Mrs. Mary Phelps occurred Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Henderson, at Central City, Iowa, where she has made her home for more than a year. The remains were brought to West Liberty and from there to Springdale her home. The services were held from the Friends church Monday afternoon, of which she had been a member for many years. The pallbearers were six of her grandsons--Charlie T. Montgomery, Ray H. Rockafellow, Leffie K. Maxson, Everett Henderson, Charlie Phelps and Chesley C. Maxson.

Mary Millett, daughter of William and Sabrah Millett, was born in Liverpool, England, in the year 1839, April 12th, and passed out of this life March 4, 1921, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 23 days.

In August of the year 1855 she was united in marriage with Charles Phelps, who preceded her in death 17 years. To this union eleven children were born, Anna E. Maxson of Downey, Susan Montgomery, Addie and Delilah Rockafellow of West Liberty, Emma Henderson of Central City, Lida Connor of Downey, William C. of Springdale, Walter of Milton, Revoe and Edward of Davenport, all of Iowa. Ernest preceded her in death 5 years.

She was a devoted wife and mother and dearly loved to be in her own home. But when the time came to give it up several years ago, she did it with quietness and patience.

She with her parents came to America when but a babe and like many others in those early days endured many hardships. The family finally settled in Cedar county near Springdale, where she has spent her entire life with the exception of the last few years she has lived with her daughter.
