Another pitiful tragedy shocked West Branch and vicinity when it was learned Sunday afternoon that Walter Preston, twelve-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Preston, had been hit on the temple with a base ball, with fatal results.

A number of lads were playing catch at the home of Mrs. D. C. Fitzpatrick's. Walter was not participating in the play, but was watching the others, and it is not known how he could possibly have been in range of the ball which struck him directly on the temple. It was some time before any one realized that the accident was serious, as the boy continued to play. Finally he complained of sickness and was at once taken home. Before his arrival at home, however, he became unconscious and died in about two hours after the accident occurred.

Funeral services were held from St. Joseph's church Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Father Knabel of Tipton conducted the obsequies.

The entire neighborhood was shocked when it was learned on Monday morning that Walter Preston had been accidentally killed on Sunday forenoon. Walter was a pupil in the Springdale school, loved by his playmates and admired by his teachers because of his obedience and kind dispostion. He will be greatly missed by his school mates and many bereaved relatives and friends. Walter was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Preston. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family in their loss.

7 July 1921 - West Branch Times

Walter Preston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. H. Preston, died at his home near Cedar Valley on June 26, 1921. Walter was preceded in death by one brother, George, nine years ago this month. Walter was the youngest son of George and Lizzie Preston. He was a kind and loving child and obedient to the slightest wish of those about him. His going away has left his home in darkness and sadness and tears and a vacant chair that never can be filled. Walter was born April 16, 1909, being 12 years, 2 months and 10 days old at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his loss a kind father and mother, three sisters and one brother--Mrs. E. R. Bujwoski of Wilton, Ia.; Mrs. J. F. Clements of Mechanicsville, Ia.; Wm. J. Preston and Mary Preston at home. The funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church at Cedar Valley, Ia., Tuesday morning, June 28, 1921. Rev. Father Keneble having the funeral in charge, gave a very fitting and impressive sermon. His pallbearers were Manual Clements, Donal McGee, Donal Mather and William Rein.
