14 February 1878 - The Tipton Advertiser

LATHAM - At his residence in Tipton, Sunday morning, February 10th, 1878, Mr. ALSOP LATHAM, aged nearly seventy-nine years.

Deceased was born at Sharon, Vermont, June 5th, 1799. Some twenty years ago he first came to Iowa and purchased a farm here; it was, however, a number of years later that he came here to reside. The married life of Mr. L. stretched over fifty-five years' companionship with the widow who survives him. They had four sons who grew to manhood. One still resides in the Granite State; one is in government employ in Japan; one, Dr. Latham, is here where duty to his aged parents seemed to call; and the fourth fell before a murderous bullet in the early Kansas troubles. Deceased had long been a member of the Baptist church--how long, we do not know. His health had not been vigorous of late, although up to Friday last it was as usual, and his sudden death seemed to be only a giving out of the vital powers and consequent failure to longer resist the encroachments of settled disease. The funeral on Tuesday, Rev. S. A. Lee officiating, was largely attended.
