1 November 1906 - The Clarence Sun

Oscar J. Whitson, banker and prominent citizen of State Center, was found dead in bed last Saturday morning at the home of his nephew, John L. McMahon. Heart disease is attributed as the cause of his sudden demise, which occurred at 6:30. Mr. Whitson was known to many of the people of Clarence, having resided with his cousin, Abner Piatt, north of Clarence, some years ago. He was 49 years of age, and was born in Pennsylvania. When a child his parents moved to Iowa. Twenty-seven years ago he was married to Miss Julia Lay. In 1866 Mr. Whitson went to State Center to accept the position of station agent with the North-Western, serving in that capacity until 1872, when he entered the J. W. Dobbin bank, in which he later became a heavy stockholder and president, and was prominently identified with the business and public affairs of Marshall county.
