16 August 1906 - The Clarence Sun

Jesse Finch was born in the state of New Jersey, Dec. 12, 1816, and died at his home in Cherokee, Iowa, July 26, 1906, aged 89 years, 7 months and 14 days.

Mr. Finch was among the army of Iowa's noble pioneer men, having moved from Olin to Cedar county in 1854, in a wagon. In 1861 he moved to Jones county, where he lived with his family, and where he was a familiar figure for twenty-three years. On Jan. 21, 1884, he moved with his family to Cherokee county, where he resided at the time of his death.

Mr. Finch had always been a strong, rugged man, even in old age, until he attended the golden wedding of his daughter at Massillon last fall, since which time he has been failing. He was always active in church work, and during his residence in Jones county was a member of the Free Will Baptist church at Pleasant Hill.

The funeral services were held at the Congregational church at Cherokee, Friday, July 27, at 3:30 p.m.

He leaves to mourn his death a wife and ten children--Mrs. R. Bumgarner, Mrs. H. A. Emerson, Mrs. Lester Vansickle, Mrs. Wm. Mason, O. W., E. L., O. S., Frank, Fred and Mrs. Grace Harker. The children were all at his bedside when he died except Mrs. H. H. Emerson of Massillon, Mrs. Lester Vansickle of Oxford Junction, and Frank Finch of Three River, Calif.

We were well acquainted with Uncle Jesse Finch, as he was called by everyone, and many a delightful hour of our boyhood was spent at his home in Hale township. He was a jolly, wholesouled man, and the visitor at his home was always made to feel most welcome. Peace to his ashes. --Olin Recorder
