2 June 1932 - The Tipton Advertiser

Henry C. Schmidt age 47, farmer residing three miles southeast of Bennett, was killed about 10 p.m. Monday when he lost control of the car he was driving and it overturned into a ten foot ditch at the four corners a mile south of Bennett. Schmidt was thrown out of the car and his head crushed. It is believed death was instantaneous. He also suffered a broken neck and his face was buried in the mud.

Virgil Willey and Ralph Dresselhaus, who were driving on the road about midnight noticed the wrecked car and when they stopped to investigate they discovered among the wreckage Schmidt's body. They drove to Bennett and summoned a doctor but Schmidt had been dead for several hours. Coroner A. M. McCormick of Tipton was also called and after investigation, pronounced death accidental. It was reported to the Cedar county authorities that Schmidt and Leonard Paustian of Bennett had attended the Eagles lodge initiation in Muscatine. The two men returned to Paustian's home in Bennett and Mr. Schmidt borrowed the machine to drive to his home. The car was wrecked.

Mr. Schmidt was born May 19, 1885 near Dixon, Iowa, and was the only son of the late Heinrich and Anna Thede Schmidt. He received his education in the rural schools and was united in marriage to Miss Kate Petersen, February 9, 1907, at Dixon. The couple were engaged in farming on the Schmidt homestead three and one-half miles southeast of Dixon for 16 years and nine years ago they moved to the present farm. Mrs. Schmidt preceded her husband in death in January 1931. Mr. Schmidt was a member of Davenport Lodge No. 285, F. O. Eagles.

Surviving are one son, Lloyd, at home, three sisters, Mrs. Dora Hein, Mrs. Ernest Puls, both of New Liberty and Mrs. William Miller of New Liberty, R.F.D.

The body was taken to the Runge mortuary, in Davenport and will be laid to rest in the Dixon cemetery, funeral services to be conducted at two o'clock this afternoon at the Dixon church.
