For the past ten years or so he has been ailing some, and has had several severe spells of sickness during that time, suffering particularly from asthma. During this time he has consulted nearly every physician in the surrounding towns, going as far as Davenport, Princeton and Chicago, but of late he appeared much better and could attend to his business. His last ailment lasted just one week, when he suffered extremely. It is thought by some of his friends that he exerted himself during the extremely hot weather in tending to farm work and that was perhaps the start of his fatal illness. His last ailment was, first uric acid poisoning and then developed brain symptoms with paralysis, the later causing death.

He was born in Germany, May 7, 1862, and came with his parents to America and Cedar county at the age of eleven, or in 1872. Since that time he has labored incessantly until he has become the owner of 163 acres in Fairfield township, and was just arriving at an age when he could enjoy the fruits of his labors. He married Miss Caroline Sasse, May 1st, 1884. To mourn the loss he leaves behind, his wife and four children: Otto, age 16, Gustav 12, Pauline 8, and Clara 1; also his parents and two sisters. They have buried one child, Johannas, a twin brother of Pauline.

The funeral was very largely attended on Wednesday afternoon, it being conducted by Rev. J. H. Brammer of Lowden at the German Evangelical church, Clarence, and the remains laid to rest in the Clarence cemetery.
