James Collins was born in Birchwood, Essex county, England, September 19, 1842, and died of cancer at his home in Hale township, December 31, 1904, leaving a wife, four children, and ten grandchildren; and three sisters of England to mourn his death.

He came to America in 1860, starting May 1st, and reaching here about June 18th.

He made his first home in Red Oak, Cedar county, where he resided for four years.

He was married March 20, 1864 to Miss Hannah Burgarner, who died February 19, 1872, leaving two children: George, of Oxford township, Jones county, and Sarah Emma, now Mrs. John Austin, of Clarence, Cedar county.

He was married to Sarah Linn Austin May 12, 1873.

To this union was born three children, May Ellen, now Mrs. Camption, of Harris, Osceola county, Iowa, Charles William, of Hale township, and one child having died in infancy.

One of his sisters remarked in one of her letters of recent date "Dear Brother, I must pray for you that God may spare your life if it be His divine will."

He was a loving husband and father, kind neighbor and will be missed by all who knew him.

The last place he went was to the polls to cast his vote for Roosevelt.

The funeral services were held January 2, 1905, at Pleasant Hill.

The remains were laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill cemetery.
