19 January 1905 - The Clarence Sun

From The Tiller and Toiler of Larned, Pawnee county, Kansas, we take the following concerning a former resident of Clarence who conducted a furniture store in the building now occupied by Wm. Martzahn.

Wm. Crosby died at his home in this city Tuesday, Jan. 10th, at 3 o'clock p.m., at the ripe old age of 86 years, death resulting from the general debility and decay of age. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. Robt. Coltman officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in Larned cemetery beside those of the deceased's wife.

Mr. Crosby was born in Brookline, New Hampshire, February 20, 1819. He was married to Miss Lavina Reed in 1884(?); who died in Larned in February, 1894. Together, with eight other families Mr. and Mrs. Crosby came to from Clarence, Iowa, in the fall of 1877. Of this colony of the pioneer settlers of Pawnee county but one member (a few words here are unreadable) who has been an intimate friend of the deceased for the past forty years. Mr. Crosby engaged in the furniture and undertaking business for many years in what is now The Tiller and Toiler building. About five or six years ago he retired from active business, spending most of his time at his home. His only surviving relatives are two sisters and one brother, all of whom are over 80 years of age, and all live in the east.

Mr. Crosby was a good citizen in every sense of the word. He was a plain and unostentatious life, but the good deeds which he did and the purity of his personal habits make the good effects of his long years of residences in the community beyond calculation. A good and useful life well lived out to the end.
