12 January 1905 - The Clarence Sun

From the Battle Creek, Iowa, Times of Jan. 5th, the following is taken, which concerns the death of T.O. Manning, who was well known to the older citizens hereabouts, by whom he was highly esteemed. Mr. Manning at one time owned the farm which is at present the property of A. R. Bixler, later he and his family moved to Clarence and occupied what is now the Presbyterian parsonage. The family left Clarence about twenty-two years ago. The following is from the Times.

Truman Osborn Manning was born at Fredricktown, Ohio, October 3rd, 1826. Died at his residence in Battle Creek, Iowa, Wednesday, December (?), 1904, aged 78 years, 2 months and 25 days. Mr. Manning was married to Miss Adeline R. Sylvester October 20th, 1853.

The widow, Mrs. Manning, and four children survive, two daughters and two sons, Mrs. W. H. James of Battle Creek, Miss Elizabeth, their adopted daughter whose life from infancy has been so beautifully woven into the lives of her natural grandparents; Sylvester S. Manning of Canton, South Dakota, and Milo A. Manning of Ames. Iowa.

The fraternal spirit that emanated from our highly respected friend won for him an unusual number of admirers. A little over a year ago the deceased began to fail in health and the development of his acute disease gave him much suffering. Conscious for months of the approaching dissolution, he expressed his faith regarding the future and with a perfect submission looked forward to a release from his sufferings. He has entered into rest.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Geo. E. Driver, Friday afternoon in the Presbyterian church and the body interred in Mount Hope Cemetery.
