6 March 1902 - The Clarence Sun

Died. - Mrs. Sarah Hill, the lady who, with two daughters recently moved here from Calamus, died at her home Tuesday evening at 5 o'clock. The funeral is announced for Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home. The family, although not long here, have won many friends and the mourning ones have the deep sympathy of all.

13 March 1902 - The Clarence Sun

Mrs. Sarah Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Frederick Weiss, was born in Baden, Germany, March 22d, 1848. Of the six members of her father's family the only surviving ones are August Weiss and Mrs. Catharine Neff, both of Calamus.

When Sarah was seven years old her parents immigrated to America and settled near Dixon, Scott county.

On Nov. 26, 1865, she was married to Josiah F. Hill, shortly after which they settled on a farm near Calamus, and where the family has continued to reside until a few weeks ago when they took up their residence in this place.

They were blessed with six children, the oldest, a son, died at about two years of age. The five daughters are, Katie, the oldest, who has been a hospital nurse at Bloomington, Ill.; Hattie Stoller of Grand Mound, May Woods of Council Grove, Kas., Fannie and Matilda, now of Clarence.

Soon after the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Hill they both united with the German Baptist church, to which they both adhered till translated to the church above.

Seventeen years ago, when the children were still small and the farm a debt upon their hands, the husband died, leaving a double burden upon the faithful mother. But God, who is always the friend of the poor and needy, was her friend and gave her strength and wisdom for her task, which she so nobly performed.

The past two or three years the mother has been in infirm health, but no one supposed the end was so near.

It was with some reluctance that she gave up the old family home, but after getting settled in our village, she became entirely reconciled to the change and hoped to find rest from toil and happiness in her new home. A few days before death came she expressed herself as being so tired and desired rest. Although her wish did not come in just the way she anticipated, God gave her that most perfect rest, where her hands and feet will never tire again, and where she now more fully than ever before realizes what Jesus meant when he said, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest."

The end came after a night and a day of quiet sleep, till on Tuesday evening, March 4, when her spirit went to be with God. And it may now be said of her that her children will rise up and call her blessed, and also that she now rests from her labors and her works certainly will follow her.

The funeral was held on last Friday afternoon at the home and was largely attended. Rev. John Zuck conducted the services assisted by Rev. W. R. Doner and Rev. A. T. Bishop. The remains were interred in the Clarence cemetery.
