7 March 1901 - The Clarence Sun

A very sudden and very sad death from apoplexy, occurred in our midst last Sunday afternoon at 3:30. Mrs. Elsie Gardner, wife of Edwin Gardner, dropped dead on the porch of Mr. Gardner's mother's home in Clarence. She and her husband had drove in from the old home farm of the Gardner's, where they resided, to spend the afternoon at their mother's and visit with Charles Gardner and family, who had just returned from Kansas. She was in seeming perfect health and alighted and went to the house. While in the act of removing her rubbers she fell and died immediately. Those in the house noticed that she did not come in as soon as she should and Mrs. Charles Gardner opened the door to learn the cause of the delay and found her where she had fallen. Dr. Greig was summoned, but she was lifeless soon after found, and the doctor could do nothing. What was to have been an afternoon of joy was turned tone of great sorrow, in the preparation of the remains for burial and sending the sad news to relatives and friends. Mrs. Gardner's father, Richard Labee, and sister, Mrs. Gertrude Sparks of Earlville, Ill., came as soon as possible to be present at the short services here conducted on Wednesday morning, by Rev. H. S. Bargelt, at the home where she died. The father and sister together with the bereaved husband, Mr. and Mrs. Will Gardner and Miss Rachel Gardner left at noon on Wednesday, with the remains for Earlville, where the funeral was held and interment made. The husband and other relatives made to mourn by the untimely demise of their loved one, have the sincere sympathy of this community. She was but twenty-one years of age and had been married but thirteen months.
