J. H. Burgess died at his home in Sterling, Ill., at 3:30 o'clock Sunday morning, March 23, 1902, in the 66th year of his age.

As he had long lived in Iowa the remains were brought to Clarence for burial on Tuesday after short services were held at 9 o'clock at the place of his death. At 2 p.m. the funeral took place at the M.E. church, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. H. Doner, following which the remains were taken to their last resting place in the Clarence cemetery by the hands of the deceased's friends and former neighbors: G. D. Onions, E. W. Coe, H. W. Spaulding, H. P. Grim, J. J. Dexter and Fred Hecht, who acted as pall bearers.

James Henry Burgess was born in Ira, Gayuga county, New York, April 28, 1836. His early life was spent in New York state. In 1851 he moved to Illinois with his people and settled on a farm in Whiteside county. Immediately after his marriage to Lavina Switzer on Oct. 6, 18?, he came with his wife to Iowa and settled on a farm in Jones county. He afterwards purchased the Abe Rogers farm south-west of Clarence. From this farm the family moved in 1895 to Clarence, where Jan. 29, 1896, Mrs. Burgess died.

Mr. and Mrs. Burgess were the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living and were present at the funeral Tuesday, i.e.: Ben E., of Clarence; Mrs. Wright Holmes of DeKalb, Ill.; James A., of Chicago; Mrs. Blanche Dean, of De Kalb; Milen E., of Stanwood, and Etta, Verna and Dolly who lived at the family home in Sterling. The children with two sisters and two brothers are left to mourn the death of a kind and loving father and brother.
