21 March 1901 - The Clarence Sun

Died, at his home three miles southeast of Clarence, of grip, on Monday, March 11, 1901, at 12:10 o'clock p.m., John Hickey, aged 68 years.

Deceased was born in Templemore, County Tipperary, Ireland, March 15, 1833, where he lived till he was 20 years of age coming to America in 1853. On April 6, 1858, he was married to Joanna Butler (died Aug. 26, 1873.) and to them were born nine children, four of whom are dead, three sons and one daughter. Those living are Miss Maggie Hickey, Miss Nellie Hickey, Clarence; W. P. Hickey, Tipton, John Hickey and Mrs. Maurice O'Conner, Vall(?), Iowa, all of whom were present at the funeral.

Mr. Hickey came to Iowa in 1858, settling first in Clinton county. The following year he moved to this county. He has therefore been a resident of the county 42 years. In 1877 he moved onto the farm where he lived.

The funeral was held at the residence on Wednesday, following his death, with interment at Toronto, Clinton county.

With the death of Mr. Hickey, Cedar county loses another of its early pioneers. He was a man of original characteristics, rather peculiar perhaps until continued acquaintance proved how he expected to be understood. These peculiarities of character and his long residence in one spot, made him widely known hereabouts. This wide circle of acquaintances will miss his always cheerful salutations. The community has lost an upright and honorable citizen and extend sympathy to his family.
