Mrs. John Gortner passed to the world beyond at the Gortner farm near Clarence on Thursday evening at 7:00 o'clock, April 25th, 1901, after an illness of five weeks, aged 39 years. As stated in The Sun last week, her death was hourly expected for some time before it came. The death of this estimable lady is made additionally sad on account of leaving motherless three small children: Naomi, aged five years; Verna, aged two years, and the baby daughter born on Saturday, March 23d. Mrs. Gortner's maiden name was Mary Francis Sisler, and she was born February 2d, 1862 at the old Sisler home in Red Oak, where she lived until her marriage. On December 26th, 1894, she was married to John Gortner, who, besides the three children and four sisters and two brothers, survive her. She was an active member of the M.E. church, first at Red Oak, where she was organist twelve years, and later became a member of the Clarence church. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at the church to which she belonged and was very largely attended. The services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. H. S. Bargelt. Those who bore the remains to their last resting place in the Clarence cemetery were: Messrs. James Spear, Fred Britcher, Calvin Sawyer, John Wood, Jr., Daniel Diehl and Edgar Decker. A large circle of friends join the bereaved ones to mourn the loss of a very kind, faithful and affectionate wife, mother, sister, friend.
