27 November 1930 - Pioneer Press

William H. Guthrie died very suddenly about 5:30 o'clock Monday evening. Mr. Guthrie was stricken with a heart attack, outside of the Greenwald Grocery store. He was carried inside the store and died in a very short time.

When the report of his sudden passing came to his family and acquaintances it came as a severe shock for although he had never entirely recovered from an illness of some ten years ago, he was active until the last moment, attending to his live stock buying.

The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. R. C. Scott, of Clarence, former pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. Schmidt, the present pastor, officiated. The singers were Mr. and Mrs. Duane Rigby, Graydon Johnson and Mrs. Maud Stoffel. The pall bearers were six close friends of Mr. Guthrie: Nelson Gunn, James Gunn, Samuel Young, Earl Miller, Samuel Wilson and Harry E. Gibeaut. Interment was made in Rose Hill Cemetery.

William H. Guthrie, son of James and Emily Guthrie, was born on a farm near Mechanicsville, July 18, 1861, and passed away very suddenly at Mechanicsville, November 24, 1930 at the age of 69 years.

He was one of a family of five children and was the last to answer the final summons. On April 26, 1883, he was married to Martha Albaugh. To them were born three children. One son, Bertie, who died in infancy and two daughters, Mrs. Verna Davidson and Mrs. Neva Greenwald, both of Mechanicsville.

Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie made their home on a farm west of Mechanicsville until 1900, when they moved to town where he has been engaged in the live stock business ever since.

Mr. Guthrie had a severe illness about ten years ago and although he never fully recovered from this illness he was active up until the last moment and his passing was a severe shock to his family and friends.

Beside his wife and two daughters he leaves four grandchildren: Nadine and Ronald Greenwald and Verle and Kathleen Davidson, to whom he was greatly attached. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.
