30 January 1890 - The Tipton Advertiser

DIED. DAVIS.--At her home in Shell Rock, Iowa, Jan. 10th, 1890, of paralysis, Mrs. Susan Davis, in the seventy-ninth year of her age.

Susan Liverich was born in Guernsey Co., Ohio, Nov. 22d, 1811. She went with her parents to Richland Co., Ohio, and there, in 1829, was married to Lewis Sweitzer, wo died in 1833 leaving her with three small children. In 1837 Mrs. Swetzer and her little family came with her brother, Mr. John Leverich (whose death occurred only a few weeks previous to her own) to Cedar County where she bought a claim for each of her children and herself and where she was a well known and highly respected resident for almost half a century.

In 1842 Mrs. Sweitzer was united in marriage with Hiram Davis, one of the county's pioneers. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Davis, two of whom preceeded their mother to the other world. In the fall of 1882 she moved with her husband to Shell Rock, where her long and useful life ended as already stated. She had been quite an invalid for several years, but on Monday, Jan. 6th, at about eight p.m. she was stricken with paralysis which left her blind and helpless and after which she gradually failed until the end came. A brother and the two youngest sons were telegraphed and arrived before her death to join her three elder children at the bedside.

For thirty-seven years she had been a faithful member of the M.E. church--lived constantly the religion she professed and was well prepared for the summons to stand before the Master. The funeral was held from the M.E. church on Sunday, Jan. 12th, the service being conducted by Rev. J. A. Davis, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Shell Rock. Deceased leaves a husband, four sons and one daughter to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted wife and mother.

There is no death, but angel forms
Walk o'er the earth with silent tread;
They bear our loved ones away,
And then we call them dead.
And ever near to us, though unseen,
The dear immortal spirits tread,
For all the boundless universe
Is life. There are no dead.
