5 September, 1889 - The Tipton Advertiser

BURNS.--At the home of her parents, in Tipton, on Wednesday, August 28th, 1889, Miss Mary Jane Burns, aged 33 years, 7 months and 24 days.

Deceased was born in Sheffield, Ill., Dec. 4th, 1855. She came with her parents to Tipton in 1860, where she has since resided. In 1864, when only eight years of age, she was converted under the ministry of Rev. Samuel Pancoast and united with the M.E. church, of which she has ever been a consistent member. She has always loved the Church and Sabbath School, and one of the greatest deprivations to her was the inability to attend these services of the church during her illness. She was taken sick with lung fever in February, 1888, from which she never fully recovered. And while at times her health seemed to improve yet the disease, consumption, became seated and has finally resulted in her transfer to the better country where there are no wasting diseases. During her long illness, and considering all the circumstances, she was remarkably patient and trustful. When dying she said: "Can this be dying? Why I am so happy!" She said goodbye to her family and friends, and seeing an unconverted person present she called to her saying, "Will you not come to Jesus and meet me in Heaven?" and securing the promise her happy spirit took its flight to the "Home over there." So that
"Another hand is beckoning us,
Another call is given,
And glows once more with angel steps
The path which reaches heaven."

The funeral services were held in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. D. Sheffer and in the presence of a large number of sympathizing friends and neighbors. D.S.
