12 February 1920 - West Branch Times

Samuel Mather, one of the beloved pioneers of Cedar county, passed away this morning at 8:45 o'clock, the end coming in Iowa City, whither he had come in futile quest of health and strength, a fortnight ago today.

The funeral will be held Sunday morning, at 10, from the Friends Meeting House, Springdale.

Mr. Mather had lived on his beautiful farm, "The Evergreens", not far away from that village, many years.

He was a birthright member of the meeting, with which he was associated earnestly and helpfully to the cause since childhood.

The good Iowan, born in 1846, was a native of Ohio, but left that state as a lad of four years, and came to Iowa, walking a large part of the distance, behind his father's "prairie schooner", which was propelled by the faithful oxen of a by-gone generation. Thereafter, during the period of almost 70 years (he would have been 74 had he lived until November) he made his home in Cedar county.

Mr. Mather was widely known in this section of Iowa, and was held in high esteem, as a worthy citizen, and Christian gentleman.

Mourning his death in his immediate family, are his widow, Ellen K. Vette Mather, two sons (Paul V. Mather, Wellman; and Anders V. Mather, Springdale) and four daughters, Mesdames Rachel Bush, S.U.I.B. Ph 1902, the wife of Prof. Stephen H. Bush, of Iowa University, Beth Higbee, the wife of Prof. F. G. Higbee, of Iowa University, Houghton Page Hingham, Mass. (who will be recalled as Edith Mather, formerly a student in Iowa University, liberal arts) and Frederic P. Lloyd of Hanover, N. H.

Other surviving kinsfolks are two brothers, Daniel Mather, of Indianapolis; and William Mather, of Tipton, Iowa. -- Iowa City Press
