5 November 1863 - The Tipton Advertiser

ANOTHER SOLDIER GONE. - Day by day death is claiming its victims caused by the present unholy and causeless rebellion. Not only on the battlefield, in the hospital, in the camp, but in the peaceful and quiet home circle are brave men daily yielding up their lives, from causes produced by their patriotism and love of country. Saturday last added another victim to the fearful list. On that morning, Lieut. Myron H. Begole, of Co. B, 24th Iowa volunteer infantry, died at the residence of his father-in-law, Jacob B. Hall, in this village, aged 38 years. The deceased was born in Mt. Morris, and resided there until about eight years ago when he removed to Iowa. Soon after the war broke out and when there was a call for brave hearts and strong arms to defend the old flag against the assaults of rebels and traitors, the deceased volunteered as a private. Soon he was promoted to the post of Orderly Sergeant, and again soon promoted to a Lieutenantcy. On the organization of the regiment, it was ordered to Missouri, and thence to Arkansas, taking an active and honorable part in the memorable conflicts that wrested the former State from the hands of traitors and nearly cleared the latter of rebels. Early in the spring he was attacked with camp dysentery. But his patriotism would not allow him to ask for leave until he was rendered unfit for service. Early in April he returned to this place, hoping that the ministering care of a kind wife and devoted friends would soon restore him to health. But in this he was disappointed. The disease had too strong a hold and he lingered along until death finally relieved him of his sufferings. He was a man of correct habits and most exemplary character, and in his death a wife and one child loses the protecting care of a kind and faithful husband and father. The funeral was very largely attended on Sunday last at the Second Presbyterian church, the Rev. Geo. P. Falsoin, delivering the funeral discourse, assisted by Rev. Watts. The house was filled to overflowing, and in this said bereavement the family and friends have the consolation of knowing that they have the heartfelt sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The Masonic fraternity, of which the deceased was an honored and respected member, turned out in considerable force, preceded by McArthur's Cornet Band, of Mt. Morris. The solemn music of the band, and the eloquent and impressive burial service of the fraternity, which was most admirably delivered by Rev. Mr. Irish, of St. Michael's church, added no little interest and solemnity to the occasion. After the ceremony at the grave, the body was lowered to its final resting place, adding one more victim to this unnecessary civil war. Rest in peace, faithful and valiant soldier. -- Livingston (N.Y.) Republican, Oct. 15th.

Lieut. Begole was a resident of Pioneer township in this county. His family has the sympathy of many warm friends in Iowa. Thus is the number of patriot dead increased.
