13 February 1914 - The Tipton Advertiser

One man was killed and three others had a narrow escape from death in a crossing accident at Mechanicsville last Saturday night.

Fred Areschoug, with three or four others, were at the Mechanicsville depot to take No. 25, the local train that goes west shortly after midnight. While waiting No. 6, the local train from the west, pulled in, and as it started out the headlight of a train from the east could be seen. Thinking it was No. 25, which was due, the party crossed the north track behind No. 6, as it pulled out, and on across to the south platform. The Mechanicsville depot, it may be explained, is on the north side of the tracks. The west bound train proved to not be No. 25 but instead the Colorado Special, running at a fifty mile clip. Three of the men, barely reaching the south track when the engine went by. Mr. Areschoug was not so fortunate being struck and killed instantly.

The dead man was a resident of Clinton. He was the agent of the Singer Sewing Machine Co. for Clinton and Cedar counties, having had that work for a number of years. He was well known at Mechanicsville, and well liked especially among the members of the Odd Fellows Lodge, to which order he belonged. Mr. Areschoug was unmarried, his only known relative being a brother in Clinton, who took charge of the body.
