22 May 1921 - The Tipton Advertiser

John William Albin was born in Cedar County, Iowa, Dec. 14th, 1847, and passed away at his home in Cedar Bluff, Iowa, on Tuesday, May 16th, 1921, at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 22 days.

Aside from the time he was in the army, one year spent in California, and two years in Nebraska, all of his life was spent near the place of his birth.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Sarah J. Smith, of Republican City, Neb., his cousins, George and John Howard, of Cedar Bluff and a number of nephews and nieces. His older sister, Mrs. Isabelle Lee, and his brother Samuel Albin, preceded him in death a number of years ago.

When a mere boy he ran away from home to enlist in the army. His widowed mother tried to persuade him to return, but finding that he was determined to go, gave her consent. Because he was small in size the captain tried to persuade him to be a drummer boy, but he was determined to carry a gun. His ambition was gratified and among other exploits he marched under Sherman from Atlanta to the sea. He often spoke of the thrilling experiences of that campaign. He was discharged from the army on July 15, 1865, at Louisville, Ky. He walked to his home in Cedar county.

The flag he followed in those memorable days he loved until his death. In private life he bore the reputation of a good citizen, as loyal to his government in peace as in war.

Funeral services were conducted at the Cedar Bluff church on Saturday afternoon, May 10, by Rev. C. M. Wallace and the body was laid to rest in the West Cedar Bluff cemetery.
