10 March 1864 - The Tipton Advertiser

Died, at the house of her son-in-law, Elder S. A. Bagley, in Tipton, March 4th, 1854, Mrs. Jemima P. L. Cole, aged 96 yrs, 1 mo. and 16 days.

Mrs. Cole was born in Pelham, Mass., Jan. 17th, 1768. In early life she removed to Vt. and was a member of the Congregational Church in Sharon, Windsor Co., for 58 years. She came to Iowa in Oct. 1861, was sick but four or five days, and died, literally, of old age, in the watchful care of her youngest daughter--herself a mother and grandmother amongst us. Mrs. C. was a somewhat remarkable instance of a patient, quiet, and amiable old age; so much so as to secure the love and respect of all who knew her. She was never peevish, or fretful, but calm, pleasant, and grateful to the end.

"And I am glad that she has lived thus long,
And glad that she has gone to her reward;
Nor can I deem that nature did her wrong,
Softly to disengage the vital cord.
For when her hand was palsied, and her eye
Dark with the mists of age; it was her time to die."

The funeral service was held at the Congregational Church, on Sabbath morning, the Pastor preaching from John 6:68, "To whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life."
