21 May 1931 - The West Branch Times

John Dudley Vincent, who died suddenly on May 13, had almost reached his 77th year. He was born May 19, 1854, and was a son of James and Sarah Heathman Vincent. His birth place was Paris, Mo.; but at the tender age of two years his father came to Iowa and settled on a farm near Plato. Out of the family of nine children his death still leaves six still living. They are, Milton of West Branch; Mrs. Lucy Howard, West Branch, Heathman of Pennsylvania; Milligan, West Liberty; Mrs. F. Marker, Shell Lake, Wis.; Mrs. Mary Bair, Chicago. Harry died in California.

John Dudley grew to manhood at Plato, and in 1883 married Isabel Howard, who was permitted to live only 12 years as wife and mother, leaving five children. Mrs. Bert Schweitzer of Grand View, Iowa; Mrs. Charlie Trafford, Otto James, both of West Branch; Everett, Centerdale, Ziba John died in 1915.

In 1896 Mr. Vincent again married, a distant relative, Ida Belle Heathman, who became his wife at Paris, Mo., and of this union there were three children, Ruth Marie died in 1920; Harold of West Branch, and Melvin of Tipton are the surviving ones. This wife died in 1906. About 30 years ago the family moved to Centerdale, and there became one of the successful farmers of this vicinity. Ten years ago he retired from active life and came to live in town. He was well known to a large circle, his more than 70 years of residence in West Branch and neighborhood making him one of the pioneer settlers, and his sudden death reminds us of the rapidly diminishing numbers of those who in their day bore so much of the burden of settling in a new country which we, their children, are receiving the benefit of.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church of West Branch on Saturday, May 16, at 2:30. The Rev. H. D. Green, pastor, had charge of the service, assisted by Rev. Guy Harvey of the Friends church of West Branch. Burial was made in the local cemetery.
