Cynthia Heald was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, 8th mo. 14, 1833. When but a girl in her teens she came with her parents to Cedar county, Iowa where the family home was made at Hickory Grove near Centerdale. In 1852 she was married to John Ball, who had come from Ohio to Cedar county, two years previous. To this union were born six children, five of whom are still living, Walter and Emerson of Washington state, Addison of California, Mrs. Attie Kincaid of Whittier, Iowa, and Mrs. Clara Crew of West Branch, Iowa.

In 1882 the family moved to California, where they sojourned a few years. Five years later death claimed the husband and father while on a return visit to Centerdale. While living in California, Cynthia Ball was converted and united with the Friends church in Pasadena, her mother having been a member of Wilbur Friends. After returning to Cedar county she transferred her membership to the Friends church of West Branch, where she lived and worked faithfully in home and church and community interests.

In recent years she has been in declining health and has lived with now one and now another of her children. The past winter she has spent with her daughter, Mrs. Kincaid, at Whittier, where the death messenger came for her last First Day, Fifth mo., 1920, her age being 86 years, 8 months and 25 days.

The funeral services were held in the Friends church at West Branch, Tuesday, May 11, 1920, at 10:00 a.m. conducted by Rev. W. H. Wilson, with interment at Friends cemetery north of West Liberty.
