30 August 1934 - The West Branch Times

James Emanuel Selby, son of Charles E. and Hannah Gammons Selby, was born in Buckworth, County of Huntingdon, England, April 3, 1838, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Vincent, August 20, 1934, at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 17 days. He was one of a family of seven children, all of whom have preceded him in death.

In 1865 he came to America and settled in Wisconsin. In 1880 he was united in marriage to Verona George and the new home was established at Milford. They later moved to Morse, Iowa, and in 1895 moved to West Branch, which has since been their home with the exception of five years spent in Tipton.

He is survived by his wife, Vernona Selby, three daughters, Mrs. Gordon Endsley and Mrs. James Vincent both of this place, and Mrs. A. S. Milligan of Tucson, Ariz. Ten grandchildren also mourn his loss.

He was a member of the Church of England from childhood; in later years he united with the Methodist church, of which he was faithful in attendance as long as health permitted.

His Bible was his comfort in the last years of his life; and he spent many years reading and pondering over it.

His last years were spent in the home of his youngest daughter, Helen, where he was cared for by his wife and daughter, and where he peacefully went to his last sleep.

Funeral services were held at the Vincent home Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. H. M. Grant of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the West Branch cemetery.
