3 November 1932 - The Tipton Advertiser

Mrs. Samuel Grant Hegary died at her home near Stanwood, Oct. 22nd, 1932, after a lingering illness extending over many months. The funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon, Oct. 24th, in the Stanwood Methodist church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. Bruce Eyestone, assisted by the Rev. William Hemphill, pastor of the Untied Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Stanwood cemetery.

Sarah Ellen Ingledew, daughter of John W. and Sarah Garcy Ingledew, was born at Chambly Canton, Montreal, Canada, May 28, 1870. She was the oldest of four children, and came with her parents to Tipton, Iowa, in May, 1876. On March 4, 1870, she was married to Samuel Grant Hegarty at the home of her parents. To this union were born eight children, one of whom, Thomas C., preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1917; also two grandchildren.

As a small girl she was baptized in the Episcopalian faith, but after her marriage she united with the United Brethren church at Harmony Point, where her husband was already a member. Later, on moving to Stanwood, she transferred her membership to the Methodist church, where she continued a member until her death. In her illness she was greatly comforted by her faith in her Master and Lord.

In earlier life Mrs. Hegarty was always active in all forms of helpful service. She was a member of the ladies' aid at Harmony Point. At Stanwood she was for a time a member of the Woman's Relief Corps, and at the time of her death was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She also had the great honor of being the first Gold Star Mother in Cedar county.
