25 February 1864 - The Tipton Advertiser

DIED, February 21st, 1864, at his residence in Tipton, Willard Hammond, aged 50 years, 11 months and 18 days.

The deceased was born in Swanzey, New Hampshire, in the year 1813. In 1833 he removed to Maine, and continued in business there until 1839, when he emigrated to the West. He at first established himself in business at Hampton, Illinois, but after the lapse of three years concluded to remove still farther to the West, and eventually settled himself permanently in Cedar county, Iowa, where for the last twenty-two years he has been known as one of its early and prominent citizens.

His illness was short. Taken suddenly on Monday morning, the 15th ist., with a severe attack of congestion of the brain, he had so far recovered on the following Thursday, as to lead the family to hope that in a few days he would be applied to his business again. On Friday morning, however, he had a final attack, followed by paralysis, so severe that no hopes were entertained for his recovery. On his dying couch he exhibited the most tender concern for his family, and a warm interest in his own eternal welfare beyond the grave. On Sunday morning, 22st, at 11 o'clock his spirit took its departure to its long, long home.

Mr. Hammond leaves a wife and family of seven children to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband, a kind and tender father; a large circle of warm friends who will feel his absence as a void in the community and cherish his memory.

The remains were conveyed to the Methodist church in charge of the Masonic fraternity, where a large concourse of sympathizing friends and citizens was convened. A discourse was preached by Rev. W. H. Wynn, from 1 Cor. 15, 46: "Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual." Thence a very large procession followed the body to its final resting place. Cedar Lodge of F. and A. Masons were in attendance, and the funeral services were closed by the beautiful and impressive ceremony of the order.
