1 August 1872 - The Tipton Advertiser

Death of an Old Settler -- Mr. James W. Hanlin, familiarly known in contradistinction to Jas. D. Hanlin, his cousin, as "Big Jim Hanlin," died at his residence in Little Linn Grove, Monday noon, 29th ult. Mr. Hanlin came to this county from Ohio about twenty-five years ago and purchased from David Kiser the farm upon which he has lived ever since, and where he died. The name of the deceased was years ago repeatedly brought prominently before the people of the county in a manner to which we do not care here to refer. He has gone to his final account, and unless the future historian of events in the early days of the county shall have cause to refer to his record here, let it be covered with the mantle of charity with which death protects those who are no longer able to speak for themselves.
