Mrs. Esther Helfer, 93, for 23 years a resident of Cedar Rapids, died at her home, 365 Nineteenth street SE, at 3 p.m. Friday, after a long illness. Had she lived till May her age would have reached 94.

She was born in Lewisburg, Ohio, May 6, 1848, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Wood. When a child she came with her parents to Cedar county, where she received her early education. Later she attended the University of Iowa.

She was married to Ellis I. Moore at Tipton Jan. 20, 1866. To this union were born two children, Willard, who died in infancy, and Mary Virginia, who is the widow of DeWitt Clinton and who lives in Long Beach, Calif. Mr. Moore died and she later was married to Daniel Helfer at Clarence, and returned to Akron, Ohio, to make her home. Mr. Helfer died in 1916 and in 1919 she moved to Clarence and not long after to Cedar Rapids.

Mrs. Helfer was active in the Cedar Rapids Woman's club and in the circles of St. Paul's Methodist church.

She is survived by a daughter Mrs. Dewitt Clinton of Long Beach, Calif., a grandson, Dr. John D. Clinton of Iowa Falls, and his family, also a sister Mrs. Olive Hartley who has lived with her for many years.

Funeral services were held in the Beatty chapel Monday, conducted by Rev. Dr. C. J. Bready. Burial was in the Clarence cemetery, with short services conducted by her grandson, Dr. John D. Clinton. Those who attended the funeral from Clarence were her niece, Mrs. Ida McLeod, O. A. Stonerook, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Stonerook and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stonerook.
