30 December 1943 - The Clarence Sun

Arthur White Bushnell died at the University hospital in Iowa City on Christmas afternoon after being a patient there since Tuesday. He was 67 years of age. His father, George Bushnell, 94, of Cedar Rapids, one of the 19 civil war veterans in Iowa, is still living.

Since the above was put in type the announcement has come from Cedar Rapids that George Bushnell, the father of A. W., passed away on Tuesday night.

Mr. Bushnell has operated the Intertype machine in the Sun office since May, 1941, when Harlo Seaton, now a Corporal stationed in England, entered the service. Previous to that he owned and conducted the Stanwood Herald for about twenty years.

Last May he was injured when a backing automobile ran him down and his left leg below the knee was pinched and pushed along the road surface by a rear wheel. The wound failed to heal and may have been regarded as the primary cause of his death.

There are individuals who are receiving assistance to which they are not entitled. That is a disgrace. Mr. Bushnell was among those for whom the relief fund was created and it would have been no disgrace to him to have accepted it. But no, he preferred to see his way through as he had always done. He did not give up work when he should have. His last day and a half in this office showed plainly he was not equal to the task. He suffered physically and the quality of his work reflected the suffering. Few men would have continued under these trying conditions.

Mr. Bushnell was born in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 26, 1876.

Deceased is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Edwin L. Ruprecht of Lowden and Mrs. Robert Morden of Detroit. There are four grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon in the Stanwood Methodist church and was conducted by Rev. J. K. Delahooke. Interment followed in Linwood cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with Masonic ceremony.
