23 September 1943 - The Clarence Sun

Ernst Dietrich Wilhelm Tonne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dietrich Tonne, was born in Estorf, Hanover, Germany, on May 18, 1868, and obeyed the final summons Tuesday, Sept. 14. He attained the age of 75 years, 3 months and 28 days.

He had enjoyed good health the most of his life. Last December he was stricken and was bedfast for several weeks. On September 2d he suffered a heart attack and other complications set in, causing his death.

During his illness he and his wife partook of Holy Communion, and Pastor A. Langholz of St. John's Evangelical church at Preston ministered to him. He found a great deal of comfort in these ministrations, and himself repeated many prayers. He awaited the call of his Savior, believing implicitly in the merits of Christ, commending his soul into the Savior's keeping.

He was baptized in the Name of Tri-une God on May 31, 1868, and at the age of 14 was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Since his marriage he was a member of St. John's Evangelical church at Clarence.

He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Hansen at Clarence on December 7, 1894. To this union four sons and one daughter were born. He was a loving husband and good father, and had a host of friends.

He was engaged in farming in Cedar, Jones and Linn counties, retiring in December, 1919, moving to Lisbon, where they lived for 18 years. In 1937 he and Mrs. Tonne went to Muscatine to make their home with their daughter, several months later moving to Davenport, where they resided for four years. Two years ago they moved to Preston with their daughter and family. Here he received loving care. He became especially attached to the grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Walter, and two grandchildren, a sister and a brother.

Those who mourn his passing are his widow, three sons, Siegfried in the armed forces in North Africa, Ernest of Mechanicsville, Fred of Lisbon and Luella (Mrs. Gerald Warner) of Preston, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, a brother, Dick, of Longmont, Col., a sister, Mrs. Sophia Priess, a half-sister, Mrs. Minnie Baade of Lake Zurick, Ill.

Brief funeral services were in charge of Rev. A. Longholz at Preston, after which the body was brought to Clarence for burial. Services were held in St. John's church, Rev. F. J. Mittler officiating. Interment was made in St. John's cemetery.
