Caroline Kahl, nee Sasse, was born March 12, 1864, in Hassen Kassel, Germany. There she was baptized in infancy and in 1869 was brought to America by her parents who settled near Lowden. In 1877 she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. J. H. Brammer.

On May 1, 1884, she was married to John Kahl and they established their home on a farm southeast of Clarence. They became the parents of three sons and two daughters, of whom one son, John, died in 1900. Mr. Kahl died July 16, 1901, after which Mrs. Kahl continued to carry on the farm till 1919 when she and her son Gustav moved to Clarence, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Mrs. Kahl passed away at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 4, 1944, in the 81st year of her life. A heart ailment has given her much trouble for the past eight years and became more serious in the last month of her life.

Surviving are her two sons, Otto and Gustav of Clarence; her two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Mensing of near Lowden and Mrs. Clara Gehrls of near Clarence; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two of her grandsons are in service: Arnold Kahl with the armed forces in France and Wilmer Gehrls stationed at present at Camp Beale, Calif.

The funeral was held last Friday afternoon in the home and followed by services in Trinity Lutheran church in Lowden, conducted by Rev. Herman Maas. The music was by the church girl chorus. Interment followed in the Clarence cemetery.

Those in charge of the wealth of flowers were Mrs. Clara Brink, Minnie Dettmann, Freda Deininger, Martha Klatt.

Serving as pallbearers were: Gus D. Goldsmith, Wm. Schroeder, Sr., August Dresden, Chris Kline, Carl Licht, John Klatt.
