Truck Accident Results in Death of a Former Resident of Tipton Community
Attended Tipton Schools During his BoyhoodElmer Henry Martin, 38, a native of Cedar county, was killed about 2 a.m. Tuesday of last week, a mile north of Princeton, Ill.
Martin's semi-trailer truck went through a road barricade into a three foot excavation and burned. Martin was crushed in the cab of his truck by the weight of a load of margarine.
The highway barricade had been placed to mark the spot where a portion of the pavement was torn up for repair. There was one-way traffic at the spot where the accident occurred. Martin apparently failed to see the barricade and the warning lights.
A coroner's jury at Princeton returned a verdict of accidental death after an investigation of the crash.
Elmer Henry Martin was born June 21, 1917, at Clarence, the son of Herman and Clara Lett Martin. A former resident of Ladora, he had lived at Muscatine for 6 years.
He was married to Lucille Sparrowgrove Dec. 21, 1947, at Tipton. He was a member of First Friends church.
He is survived by his wife, a step-son Jack Boyd, now serving in the air force in Washington; a daughter Michelle, a step-daughter Roxie Boyd, a brother Arnold of Tipton, and his mother Mrs. Clara Martin.
He was preceded in death by his father and a sister.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the George Wittich funeral home in Muscatine. Burial in the Masonic cemetery in Tipton.
