Funeral services were held for Fred L. Baker, 63, Monday afternoon Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church in Mechanicsville. Dr. C. F. Littell, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Fred LeRoy Baker, son of John and Eliza Gordon Baker was born at Vinton, Iowa, Jan. 28, 1891, and passed away early Friday morning, Dec. 31, 1954, at 3:30 a.m. after heart illness since last June.

Fred was married to Alice Mae Lehr on July 10, 1917, at Cedar Rapids. To this union a daughter and two sons were born. Melvin is the only survivor.

He moved with his parents to Glasgow, Montana, March 1, 1917, and on Oct. 2, 1917, he left for service in World War I. He was in the 163rd Division. Was overseas in France 19 months and in service 22 months. He was honorably discharged Aug. 2, 1919. He was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Baker was a member of Busch-Dennis Post American Legion. The Post had charge of full military services at the church and graveside.

His survivors are his wife, Alice, son Melvin, three grandchildren, Gary, Sharon and Ronald Baker, Mechanicsville. Four sisters, Hazel Skillen, Plainfield, Iowa; Blanche Carney, Glasgow, Mont.; Alta Cancline, Arcata, Calif.; Margaret LeDuc, Hamilton, Mont.; one brother, Howard Baker of Spokane, Wash.

His parents, two sisters, Mabel Morningstar, Florence Bartsch, and a brother, Ray Baker, preceded him in death.

Mr. Baker, with his wife and son, had farmed in Linn and Cedar counties since his discharge from service. His son Melvin lives on the farm they purchased many years ago. He built a new home in Mechanicsville in 1949, where he and his wife have resided.

Mr. Baker's fine personality, his friendliness, integrity, kind and loving husband, father and grandfather was admired by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed in the community by a host of relatives and friends.
