The death of Jason Smith, 72, occurred at Mercy hospital at Iowa City Thursday night, after a short illness. He was taken to the hospital the previous Monday night, for an emergency operation, and his death came within a few days.

Mr. Smith was born in Pennsylvania and came to Iowa fifty or more years ago, arriving in Downey. There he found employment and decided to remain in the new west. Ultimately he became owner of a farm northwest of Springdale, now operated by his son Marvin, and he lived there until retiring and moving to Springdale a few years ago.

Mr. Smith was married to Eva Swart, and she, with their son Marvin, survives. Funeral services were held at the family home Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. W. A. Smith of West Liberty.
