Cpl. Duane J. Burmeister was born on January 18, 1930 at Lowden, Iowa to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burmeister nee Gade.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical faith and a member of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church.

He attended school at Bennett and Tipton and graduated from Clarence high school in 1948. He was employed by Wilson and Co. of Cedar Rapids prior to his entry into service, January 8, 1952.

Corporal Burmeister received his basic training at Camp Roberts and Camp Cooke in the tank corps. He went overseas January 1, 1953 and served with Company C, 245th tank battalion, 45th division until his death on May 19, 1953, by fragments of an artillery shell near Kongnae, Korea. He had reached the age of 23 years, 4 months and 1 day.

He is survived by his parents, 2 sisters, Helen--Mrs. Barnell Rowold, Lowden, Iowa, and Leora--Mrs. Charles Hodgden, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, two brothers, Lawrence of Springville and Harold of Cedar Rapids. Also four nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Viola, two nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Clarence at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 25th, 1953, conducted by Rev. Edward J. Bowers. Music was furnished by the church choir with Eleanor Conrad at the organ. In charge of the many beautiful floral tributes were Mrs. Blanch Burmeister, Mrs. Elna Gade, Mrs. Lucille Gade and Mrs. Eva Otte. The pallbearers were Fred Gade, Carl Otte, Fred Otte, Earl Gade, Lloyd Burmeister and Norman Burmeister.

Interment was made at the Lowden cemetery with graveside military rites by Victory Post No. 286, Clarence.
