Fred John Behrend, son of Henry and Amelia Koeppen Behrend, was born September 10, 1892 on a farm near Olin, Iowa, Jones county, and passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. Evelyn Riedesel of Clarence on December 8, 1954. He had reached the age of 62 years, 2 months and 28 days.

On May 17, 1915 he enlisted in the Iowa National Guards, and served on the Mexican Border, being discharged May 16, 1918.

On September 30, 1915 he was united in marriage to Miss Edna Ruth Lomis of Stanwood, Iowa. To this union were born 6 children: Robert from near Melbourne, Australia, Melvin of Muscatine, Iowa; Leland of East Moline, Ill.; two daughters Mrs. Melvin Riedesel and Mrs. Dale Hines both of Clarence, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, infant son Richard, his parents, four brothers and three sisters. He leaves to mourn his sudden death, his children, 11 grandchildren, 2 brothers John of Clinton and Henry of Davenport and also one sister Mrs. Martha Gardner of Lisbon.

In the past years after leaving Tipton, he resided in Davenport, but the last two years he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Riedesel of Clarence.

Rites were held Saturday, December 11, 1954, at 1:30 p.m. at the Chapman Funeral Home, with George Daufeldt conducting the services. Hymns were sung by Anna Klatt and Dorothy Claney accompanied by Helen Lane. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Behrend were in charge of the flowers. Pallbearers were Dewey Osborn, Gus Riedesel, Howard Hines, Ernest Juehring, Walter Williams and Sylvester Young.

Interment was made in the Tipton Masonic Cemetery.
