29 October 1909 - The Lowden News

Great was the sorrow and surprise when on Monday morning the announcement was made that William Ebert had died at about 11 o'clock on Sunday night of hemorrhage of the brain. But few knew that he was even ailing. His illness lasted but twenty-four hours. Mr. Ebert was one of our most powerful and healthy citizens, apparently, and his death serves to bring to mind the great uncertainity of the length of our allotted time. He was about as usual up to the time he was stricken.

It is the men of Mr. Ebert's class who have made this country what it is in many ways. Honesty and industry in his hands contributed to both the good citizenship and prosperity in our community, and consequently his taking away when he was yet unadvanced in age is of personal regret to all who have known him in his long residence here, almost his entire life. He has been a very successful farmer and only this year did he give over his farm in Fairfield township and move to Clarence with his now sorrowing widow to lead a retired life.

Wm. Ebert was born in Cook county, Ill., on Aug. 16, 1855, and passed from this life in Clarence, Oct. 24, 1909, aged 54 years, 2 months and 8 days. He came with his people to Clinton county in 1860, and to Cedar county in 1872. Feb. 28, 1879, he was married to Miss Emma Geadelmann, who now survives him together with their children as follows: Mrs. Louise Conrad, Emil, Mrs. Ann Thein, Albert, Miss Emma and William. Mr. Ebert is also survived by five brothers and four grandchildren.

The funeral services were held today beginning at 10:30 at the German Evangelical church, of which he was an honored and leading member. The services were in charge of the pastor, Rev. Emil Hansen. The following named close friends of the deceased acted as pallbearers: Fred Albert, Fred Goldsmith, Diet Helmold, Dick Hulse, Ernest Conrad, Charles Deke. Burial was at the German cemetery, east of Clarence.

The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Clarence and among the many who attended from out of town were four of his five brothers who are: Lou Ebert, Cody, Wyoming; Henry Ebert and Albert Ebert, Sibley, Iowa; George Ebert, Waverly, Iowa. Frank Ebert of Cody, Wyoming, was unable to come. -- Clarence Sun
