Mary Elizabeth Long, nee Hastings, eldest daughter of William and Elizabeth Hastings, was born November 12, 1877 at Huntsdale, Pennsylvania. Here she grew to womanhood and attended the local schools.

In January 1897, she was united in marriage to Marion W. Long. This union was blessed with six children.

In 1898, they came to Clarence, Iowa. In this vicinity, they made their permanent home, raising their family, and farming. Since retiring in 1934, they made Clarence their home.

She was a member of the Clarence Methodist church, and of the Royal Neighbor's Lodge. Poor health confined her to her home for the past few years.

She is survived by two sons, Merle of Springville, Iowa, and Robert of Clarence, seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister Mrs. Pearl Brenner of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and one brother William Hastings of Upperco, Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1933, and four children, Mable, Lester, Bruce and a child in infancy.

Mrs. Long passed away March 27, 1954, at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 15 days.

Funeral services were held at the Chapman Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30, 1954, conducted by Elder U. J. Fike. In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Mary Sonnemaker and Mrs. Henry F. Meyer. The music was furnished by Anna Klatt and Dorothy Claney being accompanied by Helen Lane. Pallbearers were Sam Thumma, George Thumma, Ernest Kintzel, Roy Cashman, Ernest Doermann and John Pfettscher.

Interment was made in the Clarence cemetery.

Willilam Long of Camp Polk, La., Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Bentrott of Wheatland, Mr. and Mrs. Max Wachall of Alburnet, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Westphal and John Westphal of Wyoming, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Storey of Olin, Mr. and Mrs. George Thumma of Tipton and Sam Thumma of Mechanicsville.
