18 August 1955 - The Clarence Sun

Samuel Merrien Thumma was born on February 14, 1887, at Carlisle, Pa., and passed away at St. Luke's hospital, in Cedar Rapids, on Sunday, August 7th, 1955, at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 23 days, after a long and painful illness. He was the son of John and Jane Sennet Thummsa. His mother passed away when he was a boy, leaving the father and a sister to rear the family.

In 1909 Sam moved to Ohio, where he worked for one year, when he came to Iowa in 1910, and worked around Tipton and Clarence.

On December 4, 1918, he was united in marriage with Ada Roberta Welty, and they made their home south of Clarence. To this union four children were born: Douglas Ray, who died in infancy, Richard L., Jo Ann (Mrs. Donold Pearson), and Max Owen, all of Mechanicsville.

In 1937 the family moved to the Red Oak community, where they farmed until 1947, when they moved to their present farm south of Mechanicsville.

He took a great interest in community affairs, and was never too busy to stop and visit with his friends, of whom he had a host. He was a member of the Clarence Methodist church, an officer of Patmos Lodge No. 155, A.F. & A.M. at Mechanicsville, of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Mechanicsville Lions Club, Red Oak Cemetery Association. He was a very loyal and enthusiastic Mason, attending his own and visiting lodges in neighboring towns as long as his health permitted.

He is survived by his wife and three children mentioned above, and his grandson, Pat Thumma; also by one sister, Mrs. John Stouffer, of Plainfield, Pa.; and by four brothers, Phillip and John of Carlisle, Pa., George of Tipton, and William of New Haven, Ohio; and a host of nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church at Mechanicsville, on Wednesday, August 10, 1955, at 2:00 p.m., and were in charge of Rev. Eugene Miller, pastor of the church, and Dr. C. F. Little, of Mt. Vernon, a former pastor. In charge of the many beautiful floral tributes were Mrs. John Greig and Mrs. William Smith. Music was furnished by Robert Britchard, soloist and Mrs. C. W. Norris, organist. The Masonic ritual was given by Past Master William E. Schrope. Pallbearers were John Greig, P. K. Pearson, J. Paul Thomas, Walter Kiehl, Horace Overbaugh and Harry Severin.

Interment was made in the Red Oak cemetery.
