Verne Whitney, a former resident of the Clarence community, died on December 11, 1956, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the age of 63 years, 2 months and 25 days. The son of Hiram Whitney and Minnie (Brink) Whitney, he was born on a farm in Jones County on September 16, 1893. He attended the local school and was graduated from the Clarence High School in 1911.

He attended Cornell College and Iowa State College. He later worked on newspapers in Sioux City, Des Moines, Chicago and Milwaukee. Mr. Whitney started the Chicago Bowler, a newspaper in 1943. He served on the sports staff of the Des Moines Register leaving the paper in 1923.

At the time of his death, he was executive editor of the official publication of the American Bowling Congress. Well-known in bowling circles, he had held the executive editorship of the Bowling Magazine since 1948.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife, three daughters and several grandchildren. Cremation was held after the services conducted in Milwaukee.

In addition to his boyhood friends and acquaintance in this community, he is survived by an aunt, Mrs. Clara Brink, and cousins, Miss Eveadell Brink and Miss Elma Brink.
