Carl H. Mather was born in Iowa township, Cedar county, Iowa, on the 27th day of August, 1878, and passed away on April 14th, 1956 after having attained the age of 77 years, 7 months and 18 days. He was the son of William Mather and Elma Negus. He was educated in the Tipton schools and was graduated from Springdale high school in 1896. He attended Penn college in Oskaloosa, from which institution he was graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1900. He continued his college education at the University of Iowa, in the law school, from which he was granted a Bachelor of Law degree in 1903.

On June 23, 1903, he was united in marriage with Jennie E. Hamiel, and to this union were born two daughters, Maurine Mather Augustine, and Bethany Mather Schuster. Mrs. Mather died in January, 1954, and Mr. Mather is survived by his daughters; a sister, Mrs. May Jones, of Chicago, and four grandchildren.

Carl entered the practice of law in 1903, with the establishment of an office in Clarence, where he practiced until 1908. He then located in Tipton, where he continued to practice until his death.

His career, as a member of the legal profession, was a distinguished one. Here, in the Cedar county courtroom, the scene of his labors, the name of Carl H. Mather will long be revered and respected. Ever mindful of the great purposes and obligations of his profession, he earned for himself, in the bar of this county and state, a niche of signal honor. He lived for his profession, and did much to advance its standing and to broaden the scope of its services to every citizen.

He was the dean of our bar, in point of years of practice and experience. He was a wise counselor to clients and to those of us whose privilege it was to practice law with him in this county.

While engaged in the general practice of law, Carl Mather was a specialist. His fine knowledge of probate and real estate law was recognized and held in high respect.

Throughout his career as a lawyer, he was an active member of our local and state bar association. He was a past president of this association. For many, many years he served faithfully as its secretary. The wisdom of his counsel, and the justice of his logic will long be remembered by those of us who worked with him. We can, as members of a great profession, look with great pride upon our deceased brother for his accomplishments and attributes outside of his profession. His home, and his family reflect his fine qualities. As a citizen of the Tipton community, he contributed freely of his time. His efforts toward making that community a better place for us and for our families to live, was a noteworthy contribution.

Carl Mather was a plain, humble man, a fine neighbor, and a loyal friend. His friendship had a tenacity that clings, and that did not change with the passing winds. Soft spoken he was, with words of kindness and cheer, truly and deeply interested in the welfare of all.

Among those who knew him, he needs no epitaph. His memory will be enshrined in their hearts. --Compiled by the Cedar County Bar Association.
