21 October 1910 - The Lowden News

Chris Kroeger Jr. got dangerously kicked by a horse Tuesday, and Wednesday morning the young man underwent a surgical operation. Having been kicked in the abdomen and lower part of chest, he sustained rupture of the bowels and other internal injuries.

The young man is about twenty-six years old and is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kroeger Sr., two and one-half miles northwest of Lowden. He was with others working on the public road. They were using a grader and the tug of one of Kroeger's horses, a four-year-old, came unhooked and Chris, while fastening the tug, got kicked by the animal.

After we had set the foregoing in type we learned yesterday the sad and awful fact that Chris Kroeger was no more. He died yesterday morning at 7:45 from the effects of the accident. This is appalling, such vigorous, manly man in the best of health and prime of life, was so suddenly taken by death. All sympathize deeply with his parents, brother and sister.

This is the second accident of the kind in that immediate neighborhood lately. For it was only on September 7th that Carl Bunge was kicked by a horse and died two days later.

The funeral of Chris Kroeger Jr. will be held Sunday morning at ten o'clock from the house followed by services at the Lutheran church at Lowden.

28 October 1910 - The Lowden News

Chris Kroeger Jr. was born near Lowden on March 28th, 1884. He died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kroeger Sr., two and one-half miles northwest of Lowden on October 20th, 1910, at the age of 26 years 6 months and 22 days.

As we reported last week, the young man, in fastening a tug, which had come unhooked while working with a road grader, was kicked in the abdomen and lower part of his chest by a horse, on October 18th, sustaining rupture of the bowels and other internal injuries. Everything that human skill and efforts could do was done for the young man, including a surgical operation and placing a trained nurse in charge, but all was of no avail. On the morning of October 20th his life departed. Besides his sorrowing parents, one brother and one sister and many other near relatives and a host of friends survive to mourn his untimely demise.

The funeral was held Sunday with services at the Lutheran church and interment in the Lowden cemetery. Rev. J. H. Brammer conducted the services which were very impressive. The pall bearers were Henry Schluter, Ed Schluter, Paul Stolte, Aug. Kroeger, Anton Wiebel and Ed Bunge, and the Misses Alma Schluter and Mary Brammer carried the flowers. It was one of the largest funerals we have ever had here and many beautiful floral pieces were brought. Deepest sympathy is extended by all, to the bereaved family.
