31 October 1957 - The Clarence Sun

Among the early settlers in the Clarence settlers, settling on a farm one mile west and 1 1/2 miles south were Gabriel and Elizabeth Watkins Sawyer.

Into this home on September 12, 1863, 94 years ago came a son, whom they named Calvin Gabriel. They could not know what his possibilities would be, but they were sure that if they surrounded him with the love of the home, the wisdom of the schools and the influence of the Church that they would succeed. And so he grew in wisdom and stature as he took his place in the community. When he was twenty-three, he joined the Methodist Church under the guidance of Rev. Milner. As he gave himself to the betterment of the community so he gave himself to the ongoing of the Church. He became a member of the Official Board of the Church in 1900 where he served his Church well.

It was in 1890 that he was married to Anna Elizabeth Britcher who came to help him to establish their home on the same farm that he had been born. They had two sons, Elmer and Ralph. The home was saddened when Mrs. Sawyer died, and then again with the passing of the son, Ralph. Then too he came to know the heavy heart in the passing of a brother, a sister and a great grandchild. But with the bitter came the sweet and his life was gladdened with 4 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, all of whom will find a void when they come to the home where Mr. Sawyer had lived all of his life.

It was a quiet homecoming when death came quietly at 7:30 Saturday evening, October 26th, 1957. Anyones personal fellowship with him was to know the benediction that comes to having been in his presence. His source of energy, his quick mind was remarkable. He often spoke of his desire to be with those who had walked the way of death before him, so that truly he goes unafraid for he walks not alone.

The Community, the Church and his family have received from him a great heritage.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29th, 1957, with Rev. Cyril Ashton in charge. The church choir furnished the music with Mrs. Robert Joslin as the organist.

Cremains will be interred in the Clarence Cemetery.
