Bertha Marie Kleppe nee Horstmann, was born July 21, 1923 at Big Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Horstmann, now of Clarence. She was baptized in infancy at the E & R Church of Big Rock in 1923 and was confirmed at the E & R Church in Clarence in 1937. She attended the school of Cedar County.

On August 8, 1941, she was united in marriage with Vernon Kleppe, son of the late William and Minna Kleppe of Bennett. To this union were born five children.

Sixteen years of happy family living she shared with those she held dear to her heart, on that farm. She was very active in church work, and was a member of Peace Church in Bennett, Iowa. Along with the work of the church she was also active in community functions such as the Amvets Auxiliary of which she was a member.

She departed from this earthly life into her fathers arms on Saturday evening, October 26, 1957, after having reached the age of 34 years 3 months and 5 days, after having suffered from a long illness.

She leaves to mourn in her passing her husband; five children, Carole, Delbert, Linda, Eilene and Gene, all at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Horstmann of Clarence; her brother Henry Horstmann of Springfield, Ill.; and her three sisters, Elfriede, Mrs. Norman Kroemer and Erna, Mrs. Merle Brendes of Lowden, and Hellen, Mrs. Arnold Klein of Olin; and her grandfather, Christian Braasch of the Russian Zone in Germany (Mrs. Horstmann Sr's father).

Funeral services were held at the Peace United Church of Christ in Bennett, Iowa, at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 1957 with the Rev. Alvin Volle in charge. The music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Mrs. Ernest Riedesel, Clarence Miller, Mrs. Alvin Volle and Mrs. Veno Conrad, who sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Nearer My God to Thee", with Mrs. Ernest Riedesel at the organ.

The pallbearers were Donald Fox, Earl Sievers, Verl Kleppe, Edwin Kroemer, Kenneth Kroemer, and Wilbur Lett. In charge of the floral tributes were Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Hinrichs, Marilyn Sievers and Bernhardt Stuehm.

Betty, as she was known to the many friends of Lowden and Carence besides her own Bennett friends was laid to rest at Inland Cemetery.

Those attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Horstman of Clarence; Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Horstmann of Springfield, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Norman Kroemer of Lowden, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Klein of Olin, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Brendes, Dona, Gary and Cathy and Kenneth and Leon Kroemer all of Lowden and Miss Anna Studt of Chicago.
