5 January 1912 - The Lowden News

The old year departed, leaving the Shadows of Death at the home of Mrs. Ernst Doermann and children, 2 1/2 miles south of this town, and New Year's day saw the funeral. Death came swiftly, closing the year in deep sorrow for that family, leaving for the new year the work of condolence.

Miss Caroline Doermann died at her home, south of Lowden, on Dec. 31st, at 3:45 p.m. of scarlet fever, after but four days' sickness, at the age of 23 years, 5 months and 2 days. She was buried in the Van Horn cemetery in the afternoon of Jan. 1st.

There survive to mourn Miss Doermann's early demise besides her mother, Mrs. Ernst Doermann, four brothers and two sisters, namely, Wm. F., Chas. E., Ernst and Ferdinand Doermann, and Mrs. Herman Richmann, all of near Lowden, and Mrs. Wm. C. Penningroth of Wellman, Ia. The entire community sympathizes deeply with the bereaved family.

Chas. E. and Ferdinand Doermann who are also at home with their mother, are also effected with scarlet fever and the home remains under quarantine, but the two brothers were not so seriously sick as their sister and both are getting better.
