5 January 1912 - The Lowden News

Myrtle Idella Northrop, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Johnson, of Decorah was born in Winnieshiek Co., February 1885 and died at Decorah, Ia., on January 1, 1912, aged 26 years, 10 months and 13 days.

On Sept. 28, 1909, she was joined in bonds of holy wedlock to Charles H. Northrop at Hawarden, Ia. One son, Lester, was born to them July 4, 1910. Under the capable pastorate of Rev. E. G. Hunt, of Decorah, she was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church of which he was pastor in 1904. She remained a member of this church until her death although the cares of the household and other circumstances made it impossible to enjoy the privilege of the sanctuary as she would have wished.

During the last two years she was a sufferer with lung trouble and lately other complications set in, hastening her untimely decease. For the last four months she had been at her parents' home at Decorah. She was ready to go when the final summons came. The pastor, W. M. Lemen, in his pastoral visitation conversed with her on her spiritual welfare and she expressed herself as resting in the arms of the Saviour. Her favorite verses in the Bible were the 23rd Psalm and John 14, "In my Father's house are many mansions."

She requested that she might make her last resting place this side eternity, in the family burying ground at Lowden, that she might sleep the last sleep by the side of her loved husband, when ever the summons might come to him also. Accordingly short services were held at Decorah by Rev. W. M. Lemen, January 3rd, and the remains were brought by Mr. Northrop to Lowden.

Death comes with its greatest ruthlessness in the breaking of home ties, but how much more sad is the thought of leaving the companion with whom she had journeyed so short a time, and of the little arms that should be stretched out to Mother, but all in vain.

She leaves besides the stricken husband and infant son, father, mother and two young brothers, Sandford and Morris J. of Decorah, and numerous relatives to mourn her loss.

Funeral services were held in the old home church at Lowden, Ia., January 4, 1912, by Rev. S. V. Williams of Delmar, Ia., a former pastor. He spoke from Romans 5:31, "Grace hath abounded unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Appropriate singing was given by the choir. Interment was in the Lowden cemetery. Among those present from away were Miss Tarvastad of Elberon, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Northrop of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Northrop and children of Grand Mound and Mr. and Mrs. John Ohe and son of Clarence.
